BREAKING NEWS: Tanner qualification disallowed

Rick Tanner, who sought to qualify for the Republican primary on July 15 for Whitfield County Board of Commissioners chairman, saw an affidavit on his behalf disallowed by the Whitfield County Board of Elections this morning, officials said. Tanner said he had been delayed traveling and could not make qualifying at the county courthouse and had an agent present an affidavit on his behalf.

The only other candidate to qualify in either party was former Board of Commissioners chairman Mike Babb, a Republican. The current chairman, Brian Anderson, is not seeking re-election.

Rick Tanner, former executive director of the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, qualified to run for chairman of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners as a Republican on Friday, the final day of qualifying, but not without some controversy.

Tanner was out of town and local GOP officials accepted his qualification form based on an affidavit from people on his behalf. They said the qualification is subject to verification by the state party.

Tanner resigned as trade center executive director in March.
